About Joe

A career built on showing up — for clients, for cases, and for the families behind both.

Joe is the founder of O'Brien Family Law and the attorney every client works with directly, from first consultation through final order.

Joe O'Brien has spent his entire legal career doing one thing: fighting for families. After a decade as a founding partner of Opal O'Brien Law, Joe launched his own firm — a natural next step for an attorney who has always believed that the best client experience comes from a practice built around people, not caseloads.

Family law is unlike any other area of the law. The cases are personal, the stakes are high, and the clients sitting across the desk are often navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Joe has never lost sight of that. From his very first days in practice, he understood that his job wasn't just to be a skilled attorney — it was to be someone his clients could genuinely lean on. That understanding has shaped everything about the way he practices law.

Experience that spans the field.

Over the course of his career, Joe has successfully handled family law matters across Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake and Will County, representing clients at every stage of the legal process. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of family law — divorce, parenting time, decision-making, custody, child support, support modification, post-decree issues, and appeals.

Whether guiding a client through negotiating a settlement, or standing beside them in a contested hearing or trial, Joe brings the same level of preparation, dedication, and care to every case. He has also represented clients at the appellate level, including presenting oral argument before the Second District Court of Appeals — a testament to the depth and breadth of his experience.

"For Joe, the measure of a good attorney has never been defined by courtroom wins alone. It's measured in the phone calls he returns promptly, the honest conversations he has when a client needs clarity, and the moments where his reassurance makes an overwhelming process feel manageable."

Available — because it matters.

Joe makes himself genuinely available — not because it's expected of him, but because he understands how much it matters. His clients are not files on a desk. They are people going through something hard, and they deserve an attorney who treats them that way.

That warmth and commitment are not things Joe learned from a book. They are simply who he is. Clients who have worked with Joe will tell you that what distinguishes him isn't just his legal ability — it's that you can feel, from your very first conversation with him, that he is truly in your corner. He takes the time to understand not just the facts of a case, but the human story behind it, and he uses that understanding to advocate more effectively on his clients' behalf.

The path that brought him here.

Joe began his legal career in 2008 at a small Lake County firm before joining Roberts PC in 2010, where he focused exclusively on family law. In 2015, he co-founded Opal O'Brien Law, where he spent a decade building a practice grounded in trust, integrity, and results.

Now, with his new firm, Joe carries that same foundation forward — with the added freedom to practice exactly as he has always believed a family law attorney should: with his full attention, his full heart, and an unwavering commitment to the people he represents.

"From your first conversation, you should be able to feel that someone is genuinely in your corner. Everything else — strategy, preparation, results — flows from that."

Off The Clock

Beyond the practice.

Outside the office, Joe is first and foremost a husband and father. The same patience, presence, and steadiness that clients describe in his work are the qualities his family knows him for at home.

When he isn't with his family or in court, you'll most often find him on the golf course — a sport he's loved for years, and one that suits the way he approaches almost everything: thoughtful, methodical, and a little stubborn about getting it right.
